PERIODS

GRADUATE YEARS (Africa Effect) the ‘70s’

She graduated with high marks, with a “Master of Art” degree in Professor Devrim Erbil’s studio. She was a research-minded student out of class. The variety of her interests encouraged her to search and experiment with new styles and techniques. She was deeply fond of color and red was her favourite color in her early years at the university.  She visited North African Countries between 1970-1973 and studied their arts. “African mask’s effects” were seen in her art in the late 70’s. “Mask Portraits” appeared in this period. Then, she started to add some texture in her art. The use of a fishing-net has been rooted in her early years at the university. She exhibited her art works with groups and also had solo exhibitions in this period. She got her 3 awards in this period also.

MORE FIGURES and GOLDEN TEXTURES the ‘80s’

She stayed in Venice, Italy and studied art and particularly, batik at the prestigious Academia della Arte for 1 year and she fell in love with the city. She learned the batik technique and started to paint her “mask portraits” by using this new technique on fabric. She had her first batik exhibition in 1979. She also created her first installation, named the “Votive Tree”, by using 50 meter fabrics, created with the batik technique, in “Findikli Park”, a public park in Istanbul.
Sevil Soyer added gold colored lace texture to her art in these years. The figure-shaped formations, the second element of the form, are in permanent interrelation with the texture. Some figures are directly formed from the texture, especially from the lace texture. She tried to carry her masks into the three dimensional “puppets” in this period either.

THE 90'S

Sevil Soyer has started to create installations in this period. She was never satisfied by using only the canvas, therefore she started to create her art by installing it into daily life. Her sensitivity about environmental pollution pushed her to create “Made in Sections”. This project had three installations which were displayed at different locations and times. “Crossings” was the first one. “Doors” was the second and “Water” was the third one. The main concept was that the humans destroyed and polluted the environment in many ways, such as through technical developments, comforts of life and life styles. The changes in the environment prepare the end of humans. The triple projects, called “Made in Sections” emphasized this point. It called everybody to have a larger vision about the environment, to think of it as a culture, because the environment is the first culture of human beings. Sevil Soyer used different materials for the three installations (Read more).

Sevil Soyer was searching to create and emphasize her ideas beyond the classical ways. In this point she thought about sharing her art and ideas with other disciplines such as theatre, music, dance, literature, architecture, engineering… She wrote her manifest and started to work on it.

She got 45 people from different disciplines together and she worked on her 1st Interdisciplinary Art Project as the artist, curator, creative director…After a long and hard working period she and the other 45 artists from different disciplines showed “Oh Beautiful Istanbul” through the 3 days in Yildiz Palace in Istanbul. It was a unique project and thousands of people visited this performance (Read more).
